the unmagnificent lives of adults

It's cold and dark and damp in Vancouver, but we have good news! There are a few good seats still available for tonight's National show at The Orpheum. Last night's show was epic. We don't want to give away too much, but perhaps expect to be walked on and a sing-a-long. Get there early! You don't want to miss Wye Oak and Local Natives. Trust us.

Tonight - Tuneyards

Pitchfork: "Back in 1983 Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon wrote an essay for Art Forum that suggested that when we go to rock performances, we pay to see other people believe in themselves. A lot of what makes w h o k i l l and tUnE-yArDs' excellent live performances so compelling is the degree to which Garbus commits to her ideas and displays a total conviction in her personal, idiosyncratic, high-stakes music. This, in and of itself, is very inspiring and empowering. This unguarded, individualistic expression encourages strong identification in listeners, so don't be surprised if this record earns Garbus a very earnest and intense cult following."

Agreed.

Luckily, a few of Lollapalooza's finest will be making their way to Vancouver. We've compiled a list to console you:

Califone

In the words of Pitchfork:

"There's no other band like Califone. Ten years ago in this publication, Mark Richardson called them "the perfect sonic evolution for rock," praising their ability to meld the noise prevalent in experimental music with the organic textures of folk as if it were the most natural thing. A decade on, that's still accurate"

You can find the whole article here

Capitol Hill

If you've never been to this event, mark your calendar for next year. Seriously. Do it.

Forecast

The Capital Hill Block Party hits Seattle this weekend! Don't know what to wear? Here's some inspiration from The Pitchfork Music Festival care of Refinery 29.

Though Vancouverites have had little opportunity to wear summer clothes, we can still appreciate a good festival outfit.

Stick A Fork In It

Pitchfork Music Festival is wrapping up what we can only assume was an amazing weekend (great music and hot weather, yes please!), so we thought we'd put up a post about one of the many artists we're looking forward to seeing this fall. A Chicago Sun-Times article about the festival refers to James Blake as a dead ringer for Aaron Neville. We think he's a dead ringer for awesome. Checkout his North American television debut on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Business Casual

Here's a summer playlist care of Chromeo. Check them out live August 2nd at The Commodore Ballroom. And be sure to wear something you can move in, because you'll be dancing all night long.

Pretty Pictures

Checkout these awesome photos from The Handsome Furs 2009 tour of Asia. The duo plays Vancouver Friday, July 22nd. Tickets available here.

Yuck

Yuck's self-titled debut on Fat Possum has set blogs.buzzing.all.over.the.internet. with its reverent salute to the 90s

Yuck and Unknown Mortal Orchestra play at The Biltmore Cabaret July 23rd.

Dream Team

If you've seen them, you already know that Les Savy Fav are probably one of the best live bands to come out of the past decade. Tim Harrington is known for his wild antics, but when reigned in by the constraints of live radio it's easy to see that this band has a lot more going for it than crowd surfing in garbage cans and literally swinging from the rafters (though it does make for an unforgettable night).

Want even more good news? Handsome Furs are also on the bill, playing in Vancouver for the first time since Wolf Parade's final show in May. The husband and wife duo recently released their third album, Sound Kapital, out on Sub Pop. The first video from the album premiered yesterday, check out the full story here

Les Savy Fav and Handsome Furs are playing at The Commodore on July 22, 2011.
